about

We don’t need to tell you that the challenges of the last couple of years have been off the scale for absolutely everyone, and foremost amongst those for us at Supernormal have been finding alternative ways to channel the energy we normally use for the festival. Thus, this zine and accompanying compilation have been put together by and for the Supernormal community, to remind everyone that we’re all out there, waiting to come together again.

Both zine and comp are intended to be some form of relief for anyone grieving the lack of a Supernormal at Braziers two summers in a row, as well as to offer a snapshot of what we do for anyone curious to learn a little more about whatever it is Supernormal is all about. Obviously sitting at home reading a printed zine and listening to a carefully curated compilation doesn’t quite come close to experiencing the wild utopia that ignites a field in Oxfordshire for three days every August - how the hell could it? Hopefully instead it’ll offer some glimmer of inspiration via the alchemical artistry of those involved.

We had the idea for zine and comp sometime in the second half of 2020, we never dreamt it would take us this long to put together and get it out there. If memory serves, organising a chaotic festival is easier than trying to muster the energy amongst ourselves to rally the assembled SN lifers and lovers, but we were overwhelmed by the response - amounting ultimately to a staple-crushing 100 printed pages and a dizzying array of music spanning a C90.

The zine contains contributions by Benjamin Dickson, Lila Matsumoto and Matthew Hamblin, Colour Out Of Space, Mark Pilington, Zad Kokar, Olivia Furey, Liv Fontaine, My Normal Oxford, Chlorine, Noel Gardner, Sexton Ming, The Hat Lady, Thorny, Sean Roy Parker and Lewis Prosser, Radiophrenia, Robin Foster, Nic Davies, Joe Thompson, B.E.E.F.. John Lynch, Andrew Fletcher, Nic FInch, David Bramwell, The Bohman Brothers, Good Night Out, Sn Archive Project, Jessica Higgins, Nils Complete, SSSSS, Beelezbub’s Buggy and many more.

The zine states that all money raised by this zine and compilation will be going to My Normal Oxford, but as their future at present is uncertain, the zine and compilation will now be raising funds for Ark T, the organisation that’s their home. Ark T is an Oxford based community arts charity. Their mission is to “use the powers of creativity and community to tackle inequality and transform lives.”

Everything in the zine and on the compilation has been contributed in kind, and on behalf of Ark T and the Supernormal team, we’d like to sincerely thank everyone who’s submitted their work for gifting their time, energy and creativity. Onward into 2022!
